How To Getting A Driving License in Nepal? [Smart License in Nepal]
A Driving License is a legal document that serves as evidence that an existent is allowed to drive motorized vehicles on a public road. In Nepal, we need a driving license in various categories of vehicles. There are many categories like A, B, K, J1, J2, etc. This article shows the steps and procedures required for applying for and getting a driving license in Nepal. We can apply for the license to ride a bike, drive a car, a bus along with other heavy vehicles. In this article we will discuss on "How to get a Motorcycle or Bike License in Nepal ?" or in general "How to get Car, Bus, Bike, Scooter, Heavy Equipment, and other transportation licenses in Nepal ?"
Following are the major steps to getting a Driving license in Nepal.
Step1: Online Registration of Form
- You can register online for a driving license in Nepal. The Department of Transportation Management under the Nepal Government manages the registration process. Since thousands of people apply for a driving license in a single day you have to apply for the registration as soon as possible in the early morning. The online registration site is surfed by thousands of users at the same time so the website might be down. You have to reload multiple times to get the application. Click here to apply now.
- After the registration is successful you will receive a confirmation page with all the details. Save or download the page as pdf and save for office visit. You have to take note of the unique ID or the Applicant ID for zonal office visit. The zonal office visit date is also mentioned in same document.
Step2: Zonal Office Visit (Biometric, Medical)
- As mentioned above you have to remember or note the Applicant ID and Zonal Office visit date. On the visit date, you have to take the printout of the online registration form with you. Visit the selected office early in the morning i.e before 10 AM to get a token for new registration. Token is available from early morning. After 10 AM the office starts its intake according to your token number.
- You have to visit any of the counter number 1,2,3 or 4 for the biometric registration. The government officer will register your form along with your biometric details. Your photo and fingerprints will be taken as identification.
- After biometric registration, you will be redirected for medical. Do not forget to take your blood group card. If you miss the blood group card you can get it inside the yatayat office. For the medical and blood group test you will have to pay around Rs. 100. During medical your eyes are tested for color blindness ad vision clarity.
- After Medical Test you have to pay Rs. 500 as Rajaswa or Revenue for the driving license. Pay the Rajaswa or revenue at counter number 7.
- Finally, visit counter number 4 for the Registration details which acts as an admit card for the written exam for a driving license.
Step3: Appear for the Written Test (Likhit)
The exam schedule is published in the official website of the yatayat office or the official Facebook page of yatayat. Follow the website and Facebook page for frequent notices. You can get the notice from the notice board of the yatayat office as well.
Usually, the exam is on the day after the zonal office visit so be prepared for the likhit or written exam for a driving license.
Step4: Appear for the Trial Exam
After you pass the written test you can get the trial exam schedule from social media or the website of the yatayat office. Get ready for the trial exam and appear for the test. For trial exam get the location of the trial center and visit the trial center before a day of the trial exam to get a token. You can get the token after 3 PM one day before the trial exam.

Step5: Receive A Receipt
After you pass the Trial Exam of your driving license in Nepal, you have to visit the Yatayat Karyalaya after 10 days to pay Rs. 1500 as Rajaswa or Revenue for the license. You will get two receipts (green and red) which act as a temporary driving permit before you get the smart license. Usually, it might take 3 months to more than a year to get the smart license.
Step5: Get The Smart License
After a few months, you can get your smart license. You must check the availability of a license before you visit the Yatayat Karyalaya. You can check the availability by sending an SMS to:33001 with Message: LC ApplicantID
